PSI Achieves 115% of 2006 Health Impact Target

WASHINGTON, DC, January 30, 2007 — PSI programs produced 57.5 million Person Years of Protection (PYPs) in 2006 — 115% of the target of 50 million — based on the PSI Sales and Health Impact Report of December 2006.

This represents a 38% increase over 2005. PSI prevented the following health outcomes in 2006:

• 6.7 million unintended pregnancies
• 13,000 maternal deaths from pregnancy and pregnancy-related complications
• 35.1 million malaria episodes
• 140,500 child deaths from malaria

On January 1, PSI adopted the Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) as its primary measure of health impact. Future health impact will be based on DALYs gained.

PSI has instituted a strategic plan designed to double the organization's health impact within five years. The organization will explicitly link its health impact goal to two external indicators to ensure alignment with the global health community: the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Global Burden of Disease.

PSI contributes directly to achieving five of the MDGs and indirectly to two more, and will report annually on its contribution toward reaching the MDGs.

PSI's interventions gained approximately 10 million DALYs during 2006, so PSI's contribution to the reduction of the global burden of disease is currently about 3%. By 2011, PSI's contribution will more than double to about 7%.
