Update: "Children's Safe Drinking Water" Winner in Amex Members Project

August 7, 2007 — A proposal from a Procter & Gamble employee has been chosen as the winner in American Express's Members Project. The project, "Children's Safe Drinking Water," will receive $2 million from American Express. The other four finalists will each receive a "recognition award" of $100,000.

Safe drinking water outreach efforts combine a household water treatment product and hygiene education, which can reduce diarrhea by up to 80% and save children's lives.

The Members Project launched on May 15 and brought thousands of American Express® Cardmembers together to submit, discuss, rate and ultimately vote on the one project idea they wanted American Express to bring to life. American Express contributed $1 toward the winning idea for every Cardmember that registered with a minimum commitment of $1 million and up to $5 million in funding.

The other four final projects were:
— "Plant A Million Trees -- Global Reforestation" paired with American Forests, submitted by Amy Walker of Canton, GA;
— "Restore our U.S. National Park" paired with National Park Foundation, submitted by Daniel Miller of Lexington, KY;
— "Teachers ask. You choose. Students learn." paired with DonorsChoose.org, submitted by Charles Best of New York, NY; and
— "Wind and Solar for Residential" paired with American Solar Energy Society, submitted by James Muffley of Victorville, CA.
