Head of Nigerian Medical Council Joins PSI Board

WASHINGTON, DC — Dr. Shima Gyoh, chairman of the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, has been elected to PSI's Board of Directors.

Dr. Gyoh also serves on the board of the Society for Family Health (SFH), PSI's Nigerian partner organization, that operates independently of PSI. In 2005, SFH became the first Nigerian non-governmental organization to be certified to receive funding directly from the U.S. government. In 2006, SFH achieved the greatest number of couple years of protection, a proxy for contraceptive use, and the second highest number of DALYs (Disability-Adjusted Life Years), a proxy for health impact, among all PSI programs worldwide.

Dr. Gyoh chairs the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, the professional association for physicians and dentists, where he is in regular contact with the Nigerian medical community and authorities responsible for public health. Trained in the U.K., Dr. Gyoh worked as a professor of medicine in Nigeria and is a retired Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health — the highest career position for civil servants in Nigera. He enjoys close relations with many senior officials in the medical and public health communities, many of whom are his former students.
