Cambodia: Postal Campaign Delivers HIV Prevention Message

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, December 4 — The Cambodian Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the National AIDS Authority and Population Services International (PSI)/Cambodia have launched a series of “HIV/AIDS Prevention Program” postal stamps to mark World AIDS Day.

The three stamps celebrate the role of PSI’s Number One condom in the fight against HIV in Cambodia. Each features a Cambodian icon: a bicycle rickshaw, the annual Water Festival and a rice farming couple.

PSI/Cambodia launched the Number One condom social marketing program in 1994 to ensure access to affordable, quality condoms to those most at risk of contracting HIV, while improving knowledge of safer sexual practices.

The Royal Government of Cambodia enlisted PSI/Cambodia as a key partner in its 100% Condom Use Program, which, according to a 2003 UNAIDS report, has helped stem the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A comprehensive education, promotion and distribution strategy, implemented by PSI/Cambodia and partner organizations, has contributed to Number One sales reaching 177 million units by September 2006, while coverage in brothels surpasses 95%.

Costs for the subsidized brand have been generously supported by international donors including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the British Department of International Development (DIFD) and the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
