Education and Prevention
PSI/ASF is one of PSI’s fastest growing and most cost effective
programs. Although it operates with limited funding, in 2006 the
program distributed more than six million condoms (which amounts
to two condoms per capita). PSI/ASF promotes healthy behaviors
among the general population in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire
using interpersonal
communications activities to educate them about HIV and HIV prevention.
In 2006, PSI/ASF held an HIV workplace training with
Chevron employees in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire. |

Insecticide-Treated Nets
PSI/ASF launched its malaria program in 2005 with the introduction
of Séréna long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito
nets (LLINs). The Séréna LLIN is distributed at a
cost recovery price through the commercial sector, as well as to
local and international NGOs, and is the only insecticide-treated
net available in Congo. PSI/ASF conducts interpersonal communications
activities at health clinics and at marketplaces to reach the population
with important messages about malaria and malaria prevention. |

Clean Delivery Kits
In 2006, PSI/ASF launched a clean delivery
kit that is distributed through health centers, pharmacies and
midwives.
The
project operates
solely on income generated from sales and is promoted by word of
mouth, without the aide of additional promotional or communication
materials. |

Safe Water
In 2006, PSI/ASF launched Procter & Gamble’s PUR
Purifier of Water, a point-of-use water treatment system
which can significantly
reduce the risk of diarrheal disease. PUR rids water of dangerous
water-borne pathogens as well as provides visible signs that water
is cleaner. PUR is currently being distributed through PSI/ASF’s
5,000 sales points (including health centers, pharmacies, retailers
and wholesalers).
In addition, PUR is distributed through NGO partners to ensure
that those most vulnerable to water-borne illnesses (people living
with HIV and AIDS, internally displaced persons, those living in
cholera endemic areas, etc...) can easily access PUR. |
